There was a celebratory atmosphere at the Town House, City of Harare yesterday as the Mayor, Cllr J. Mafume commissioned a variety of plant and equipment procured by the Harare City Council in line with their thrust of recapitalizing service delivery operations. The Mayor commissioned 20 Nissan NP200 trucks, 2 Nissan Navara single cab trucks, 1 front-end loader, 1 excavator, 4 tractors and 20 motorcycles. Council utilized internally generated resources, City Park remittances and devolution funds to purchase the equipment.
This procurement follows the adoption by the City of Harare of a theme, “Back to Basics for Service Delivery”, which is meant to revitalize service delivery.
The vehicles will be distributed to the city’s district offices for the implementation of council’s priority service areas as highlighted in the State of the City address which was delivered on 26 July 2022. These include waste management, roads, sewer and rapid response to emergencies.
Addressing management and staff yesterday, Mayor Mafume said that residents needed to start seeing a change in terms of service delivery.
“We can no longer continue promising people a better life in years to come when people want their lives to be better now,” said the Mayor.
The Mayor also said that the vehicles will be branded with the City of Harare’s coat of arms and emphasized that they should not be used for personal use.
He encouraged residents to report to council if they found any council vehicles being misused.
The city of Harare is expecting to take delivery of another fleet of vehicles which include tractors, tipper trucks, compressors, drop side trucks, hook loaders, bins and refuse compactors before the end of the year.
