Gokwe Town Council

Gokwe Town Council was established under the urban council Act chapter (29:15) on the first of July, 2006 it was divided into six wards. Amongst its key responsibility are mobilization of resources within existing legal framework and directing these resources towards addressing the basic needs of the populace in the council area.

This service chapter has been discussed and agreed by Gokwe Town Council stakeholders and is a product of Gokwe stakeholders.

This services chapter puts in place services standards that will guide Council’s management and staff in providing quality services to consumers and the general public it therefore enumerates:

  • Information on range of services on offer from the council.
  • How to redress consumers concerns or issues
  • Standards associated with such services based on consumer expectations

 

2.0       Population

According to the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT), 2012 the town’s population is 24,054 of these 10,914 male (45.4%) and 13,140 (54.6) are female. By the look of these statistics Gokwe has become bigger than some towns which got town status before Gokwe was even well known as a business center. Average rate of natural population increase stands at 1.26 percent, crude birth rate was at 31.29 births per 1000 while crude death rate stands at 18.64.

3.0 Education

3.1 Primary Education

In Gokwe center, there are 4 primary schools, enrolling a total of 4 961 pupils. About 2531 (51.01%) of the pupils are girls whilst boys constitute a total of 2448 (49.34) of the total enrolment. There are 145 teachers (both trained and untrained) in Gokwe town and the pupil to teacher ratio stood at 43:1 which is equal to the national average. The primary teaching staff complement consists of about 71.95% male teachers and 28.05% female teachers.

Secondary Education

The Gokwe town has four secondary schools. Total enrolment for all the schools is at 2 520 whilst 53 teachers provide secondary education service. Pupil to teacher ratio is below national average as it stands at 48:1. All secondary school provides Advanced Level education whilst other schools provide up to Ordinary Level. Establishment of the schools date back to 1984 and all of them are administered by the Ministry of Education. The table below provides statistics for secondary education

3.3 Province

Gokwe town council is located in the Midlands Province whose admin center is Gweru. Gokwe district is found in ecological region IV .This region experiences semi-arid conditions with annual rainfall ranging between 250 to 500mm.

4.0 Geographical location

Gokwe district is in the north-western part of Zimbabwe its average temperature vacillates at 40 degrees Celsius. It is an area bounded by a line drawn from a point on the western beacon of the northern boundary of the Gokwe south board, thence eastwards along a straight line so as to include the land under jurisdiction of the heads Mlingo, Maheve/Uiti, Rushwaya Musauki and Mupinda to the Eastern beacon. Of the boundary on Mudzangwe river, thence southwards up the river to itsjunction with old Gokwe road, thence generally south westwards to Gokwe/Kwekwe road due west to the prison farm boundary then northwest along the Kana road due west to the prison farm boundary then northwest along the boundary then northwards to its junction with the old Gokwe/Charama road thence northwards along a strip road to Chemvuri river then the along the river to a point where the boundary is drawn generally, which is the starting point.

 

5.0 Infrastructure

In an effort to address infrastructure problems in 2015 council managed to build a Town House in 2015. Other construction projects include a new primary school. Also in 2015 council implemented a massive street light rehabilitation programme. Rehabilitation of water and sewer is currently on-going under the small towns WASH projects. A Bus station: Built up; with toilets, loading bays, refreshment kiosks and all-weather shelters were constructed. Publicservices that are found in Gokwe include The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), The Magistrate’s Court the Zimbabwe Prison Services.  Gokwe is home to Gokwe South Hospital and 1 local clinic is owned by the local authority while over 7 private clinics and surgeries are in existence. In Gokwe town there are three primary schools and two secondary schools town. In an effort to address school and recreational facilities in Gokwe the council is constructing a school and stadium.

Water Sources and Their Storage Capacities

The water that is distributed in the Gokwe South town is mainly from boreholes. These boreholes are between 9 and 11. The main Reservoir Tank is 5000m3.

Booster station 4 also feeds booster station 3. From booster stations water is pumped into elevated tanks where it is then pumped to locations and the business centers. Before it is pumped for consumption it passes through screening coagulation sedimentation filtration disinfection then it can finally be stored. A total estimate of 5486 is the amount of the water supplied in the town as a whole.

 

6.0 Industries

Industry in Gokwe is dominated by small scale formal and informal Entrepreneurs. However a number of standard industrial organizations are increasingly filtering in. Two major industry that are in Gokwe town are Cottco and abattoir.

Gokwe Town apart from scores of smaller retail shops five major indigenous supermarkets and wholesalers of international standards; Spar, Metro Peach, Nyaningwe, Eden Supermarket and Agro Foods are the pride of Gokwe. There are also modern night spots, the Chicago Sports Club, Junior Sports Bar, Gokwe Hotel and Pumba Lodge.

Banks and other financial houses are also in town, the Agricultural Bank of Zimbabwe Ltd (AGRIBANK).  The parastatal organizations that are found in Gokwe include the Cotton Company of Zimbabwe (COTTCO), Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission Distribution Company. (ZETDC), Grain Marketing Board, Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) and the Public Service Commission to name a few.

 

7.0 Transport and Communications

In Gokwe there is an aerodrome for small private planes which is popularly called Gokwe Airport. In terms of communication they are various network providers which include TelOne for telecommunications Zim-Post for postal services. Econet Cellular network, Telecel Cellular network and Net-One Cellular network provider.

 

8.0 Tourism and Heritage

In Gokwe there is Wildlife Park which is one of the biggest parks in the country which is known Chirisa Game Park which is approximately 80km from the town. The Park is home to different wildlife animals including the big five and other small animals. Gokwe also boasts of a Gorge which is popularly known as the Semwa gorge. The Gorge is approximately 70km from the town.

 

9.0 Investment Prospects

Tourism sector has a lot of investment because of the link it has  to other sectors .There are investment opportunities in building accommodation in places like Sengwa gorge and Chirisa game park. This sector is one of the sector that can contribute to foreign currency earnings, employment and enlarge the development of Gokwe.

In the mining sector in Gokwe there is large reserve of coal in Semwa mine which if strongly manipulated it can benefit the local people and the nation as a whole  this coal can be used to produce electricity.

In manufacturing industry there Cotton ginnery in Gokwe that companies that manufacture Cloths like Topics and other big Companies can take advantage of Cottoco ginnery since this companies use cotton as there major raw material will be nearby hence they can come and locate in Gokwe.

Agriculture sector is also an area which has any opportunity to invest in Gokwe since the area is mainly dominated by Clay soils which are good in crop production.

Other key investment opportunities include infrastructure development i.e. water, sewer, roads and parking areas development.

 

  1. Challenges

One of the main key challenges facing Gokwe is gulley formations. Gokwe town is susceptible to gulley formations due to Kahari sand soils that are mainly dominated in the town hence the soil type that is mainly dominate is poor for infrastructure development. Importantly this can also be an opportunity for heavy infrastructure development.

Gokwe town’s economy and revenue was previously centered on agriculture mainly cotton industry, however due to the falling prices, the collection levels have also reduced affecting the local authority’s capacity to deliver services.
