Born 14 October 1961 – Died 3 February 2020

On Monday 3 February 2019 we were shocked to receive the sad news about the death of Mr Vusani Walter Matikiti. He had gone on sick leave during the second week of December 2019 as he was unwell. However, his condition deteriorated until he passed on. He was buried on Wednesday 5 February 2020. Mr Matikiti is survived by his wife and a son.

Mr Matikiti was born on 14 October 1961 in Harare to parents William and Lilian Matikiti. He did his primary education at Chipembere Primary School in Highfield and went to Moleli High School for his secondary education. His previous employment was at Harare Central Hospital, Ministry of Health and Child Welfare and a few other organisations before joining UCAZ in 1994 as an Administration Officer, a position that he held until his untimely death.

As the UCAZ family in general and the Secretariat in particular we have been robbed of a long serving member of staff who served UCAZ diligently for 26 years. Mr Matikiti’s wealth of experience and maturity were an asset to the organization as manifested in his professional approach to work and meticulous execution of duties. He was honesty and humble, a dependable individual. The gap created by his departure will be difficult to fill.

The UCAZ Secretary General Mr Livison Mutekede in his remarks to mourners before the burial of Mr Matikiti’s body said he had lost a boulder upon which he was leaning, a resourceful and dependable colleague. The President of UCAZ Clr Josiah Makombe who is also the Mayor of the City of Gweru who represented UCAZ at the funeral said that Mr Matikiti was not a loss to the Matikiti family alone but to the nation at large as he served all the 32 urban local authorities in Zimbabwe.

In his private life he was a philanthropist. He paid school fees for orphans and looked after widows in and outside Harare. He made an impact in many people’s lives. Humanity has been left poorer.

He was given a befitting send off by mourners who included the family, relatives and friends, and the UCAZ family.

Mr Matikiti will be sadly missed by his colleagues at the UCAZ secretariat and the entire UCAZ family. May his dear soul rest in eternal peace.
